NEWMARKET FOOTBALL CLUB
04 Aug 2006

Newmarket Football Club was founded in 1972 by Malcolm Bean and Paul Taylor, as an amalgamation of two street teams, Newmarket Rovers and Epsom United which was originated on the Racecourse estate in Redcar. Newmarket United as it was then known, was born on 1st August 1972.Our first strip was sky blue, a set of shirts we managed to get by raising money from taking back beer bottles and pop bottles and getting the deposit back on them. The first game against Richmond Rovers resulted in a 10-2 victory.
The team continued to play friendly games throughout 1972/73.
At the start of the 1973/74 season the club joined a newly formed junior league, the Teesside Boys League. The club colours were changed to the now famous orange shirts and our first league game on August 16th 1973 resulted in a 16-1 home win against Yarm Wayfairers. That first season also saw us in the T.H.Flory Trophy final at South Bank's ground, losing 1-2 to Guisborough Town.
The following season the Teesside Boys League amalgamated with what is now the Teesside Junior Alliance. We had a successfull couple of seasons in this league finishing runners-up in the top division.
As the league only had a junior section and with the players getting older the decision was made to join a senior league.
In June 1977 the club joined the Redcar and District Sunday league. In September we kicked off with a 4-4 draw against Park View. At the end of that season we finished in mid table which was a tough introduction to senior football. The club continued to grow throughout the late 70's playing its games at Trunk Road Redcar. The 1980/81 season culminated with us winning the division 2 championship in a play off match with the Royal Hotel Eston winning 2-1. That season had finished with ten consecutive wins from mid April.
Throughout the 80's the club enjoyed success without really reaching its full potential. Now playing at Roseberry Square, the team reached several cup finals including the North Riding Cup Final, but always seemed to lose out. The one success being the Dr Morley Cup final in 1987 with a 6-2 win over Redcar Citizens. The club had now got sponsorship from a local pub, the Pig and Whistle, so the name was changed to Newmarket Pig & Whistle F.C.
Throughout the nineties the club reached more cup finals and finished runners up in the league, but top spot always appeared to be elusive.
The club now switched to a new base at Redcar Education Centre on Corporation Road enjoying great facilities for matches and training, for which we built our own floodlighting system. At this time the club changed sponsors moving to West Two club, now becoming Newmarket West Two F.C.
Towards the late nineties the team began to get older and suffered relegation to the 2nd division in 2000.
The club began a rebuilding process, with younger players coming in.Again the club was on the move, establishing a base in the Winning Post pub, now known as Newmarket Winning Post F.C. A succession of near misses for promotion finally saw success in 2003/04 with us finishing runners up in the league. Also that year we had cup success beating Harrys 2-0 in the Chuck Hepple Trophy Final.
The start of 2004/05 saw us move to our new ground at Rye Hills School, where we now enjoy superb facilities such as the pitch, astro pitch and new changing facilities.
The first season at Rye Hills was succesfull finishing 3rd in the first division and reaching the league cup final and the North Riding Cup semi-final.
In 2005 the club formed a Over 40's team playing on a Saturday in the Sunderland and District League, winning promotion at the first attempt.
In 2009 a decision was made to switch the Sunday team to Saturday football. This was due to what we felt were falling standards in Sunday football and the move would give us opportunity to develop the club. The club joined the Jack Hatfield Teesside League and now play in the second division on Saturday afternoons.
At the start of the 2009/10 season the club changed its name to Redcar Newmarket Football Club to coincide with the move to senior Saturday football.
In October of the same year the club moved its social base from the Winning Post pub to O'Gradys Hotel in the town. This was to continue our sponsorship which had been kindly offered by Roy and Jan the owners who had sponsored us at the Winning Post for many years.
That is the history so far of Newmarket Football Club. We can only get bigger and better.
