v FARSLEY CELTIC

We travelled to Bradford to play Farsley Celtic in the1/4 final of the Yorkshire Shield. The game was played on a 4g astro pitch which to be fair suited both sides as both like to play a flowing game.
Farsley had knocked us out of the competition last season at the semi final stage so we knew we would have to be at our very best. Our preparation was good for this game and we knew what to expect.
We started quite well and there was little to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges. Good work by Lee Jefferson
down the right resulted in a cross to the far post to find Jamie Graham
but his shot was blazed over with goal at his mercy.
We fell behind on 11 minutes when a clearance by Dale was intercepted just inside our half . Farsley’s right wing back latched on to the ball. We had warned before the game that this guy was lightening quick and so it proved as he raced down the wing to the by-line and crossed, bang ! and its in the back of our net.
We managed to stay in the game although chances were few. We changed our shape in midfield slightly, making use of the roll on – roll off substitute rule with Ryann Hodgson
In the 35th minute a neat turn by Dowsey left a defender struggling to catch him and he was tripped as he raced in on goal, penalty, no mistake from the spot by MIKE DOWSE
We had a decent spell after the goal and enjoyed some good possession. As the game approached half time , we again gifted Farsley the lead. In identical fashion to the first goal, a clearance by Dale was cut out, only this time we allowed their central midfield too much space, another thing we had warned about, the result was their central midfielder picked his spot from 18 yards. 44 minutes on the clock ! Infuriating !!!HALF TIME – FARSLEY CELTIC 2 REDCAR NEWMARKET 1
The second half started with Farsley pressing us back. However we weathered the initial storm and began to enjoy some good possession. Then the first of several bizarre refereeing decisions that would begin to turn the game against us. Jamie Graham
racing through was completely halved by a Farsley defender. For some inexplicable reason the referee awarded a free kick to Farsley. The resulting protests from us resulted in three yellow cards.
The next decision that went against us was a tackle from behind on Dowsey which was an absolute stonewall penalty and it was in the penalty box. Not given, and the impact of the foul tackle meant and an injury to Dowsey that ruled him out of the remainder of the game.
Great work by by Lee Jefferson
as he burst through and fed the ball through to Ryann Hodgson
to run through and slot the ball past the keeper to level the scores.
10 minutes later Farlsey went to the other end and won a free kick on the edge of our box. The resulting free kick was fired in from 18 yards with Dale rooted to the spot to restore their lead.
We battled to get back on terms and again changed our formation. But the icing on the cake courtesy of the referee came in the final minute when Farsley’s winger went to cross the ball and his kick struck Marcus on the arm, who was stood less than a foot away with his arms by his side, the ball was hammered at him, he couldn’t have got away from it if he wanted to , but the ref awards a penalty!. Thought they were supposed to be awarded for deliberate hand ball. Ridiculous decision. The penalty was despatched and we were out of the competition.
Credit to Farsley Celtic, they are a very good side and it will be a surprise if they don’t retain the trophy.
So this ends our third season in this competition and without wanting it to sound like sour grapes, the standard of officiating in Yorkshire is decidedly poor. We have to play without assistants when we play away but I can’t think of one game we have had away from home in the Yorkshire area where the refereeing has been anything other than sub-standard.
Credit to our players who gave everything, wasn’t enough on the day against a good side. Onwards to another cup clash next week at Whitby Fishermen.FULL TIME – FARSLEY CELTIC 4 REDCAR NEWMARKET 2
