v REDCAR TOWN
By Mal Bean
Saturday 30/03/2019 home v Redcar Town (League). With over 15 players unavailable for one reason or another, Mal had to call in a few favours to enable us to get a team out for this Redcar derby game. Calling in some ‘old heads’ and lads from our ‘junior’ teams, we managed to get a squad of 14 for the game. And can I say that they, along with everyone else involved, did the club proud as we won 1 – 0.
The team – Dale (Captain.) Callum, Woody, Rob H. and Mikey.
Jay, Andy D., Marcus, Adam and Chris Coward
Subs = Leon (on for Jay) Macca and Stu T.
In the first half we battled really well, matching Town all over the pitch. The team commitment was outstanding, and the older heads in the team, Rob H., Woody, and the two Chris’s were talking, organising the younger lads. Adam, Andy and Marcus were doing a great job in the middle of the park, restricting Town from pushing forward, and creating any momentum. The back four were solid, and any chances that Town did have Dale was in magnificent form to prevent any goals.
We had a couple of half chances in the first half hour, a cross by Jay for Marcus, was just cleared before it reached Marcus for a corner. (21 mins)
On 33 mins a corner by Mikey to the back post found Callum all alone, his shot into the side netting.
When we pushed forward, Town were always quick to try and catch us on the break, on 36 minutes a free kick taken quickly by Town on the left, caught us out. The ball played to the right wing, into the box and the shot saved low down to Dale’s left. The resulting corner caused us problems, but the team’s will not to concede was good to see, and eventually we cleared the ball.
On 45 minutes, just as looked as though it was going to be stalemate at half time, Rob H and Mikey played the ball between themselves, before the ball was launched forward for Chris Coward
. As he got to the left side of the penalty area, the keeper advanced and Chris coolly lobbed the ball over him and into the empty net.
HALF TIME = 1 – 0.
The second half was pretty much as the first, with Town probing, and Newmarket defending stoutly.
The encouragement from all 11 was a breath of fresh air, when we needed to we just cleared the ball down the pitch, forcing Town back. And now and then we created problems for them when we pushed forward.
As the game went on, players began to tire. Marcus playing with an injury had slowed, but still pressed, as did Andy and Adam. The defence made sure they were right side of their man, and got a foot in when needed. Chris Coward
and Hodgey causing problems when they got the ball, holding it away from our goal.
Dale, today’s captain, was outstanding. Everything thrown into the box was dealt with, caught or punched with distance, when needed. Taking the pressure off the defence.
Town pushed forward in the last 10, as we tired, and they searched for an equaliser. But the team stood tall, Dale producing a fantastic save in the last couple of minutes as a shot looked as though it was going across him into the far corner, but he managed to tip it past the post for a corner.
90 + 2 minutes = full time. 1 – 0.
MOM went to Adam (Given by the away team management). However, for me there was 11 MOM’s on the pitch today, fantastic result and well deserved.
Downside was the two yellow cards. (Rob H. and surprisingly Marcus!)
