Saturday 26/01/2019 home to Statithes.
3 – 1 defeat.
The team – Dale, Woody, Danny Mac (Capt.) Pete P. and Luke Wallace.
Lee J., Marcus, Lewis, Adam and Jamie G.
Dowsey up front.
Bench = Puckers (on for Adam), Andy D. (on for Marcus) and Callum (on for Passman.)
MOM – JAMIE
Goal = Jamie G. (84 mins.)
Pre-match Danny spoke about the game last week against Staithes and also about commitment and pulling together.
We kicked off in the first half against the wind, and although we started well, with Dowsey forcing a fine save when through in the right of the box (5 mins) we went 1 – 0 down after 10 minutes, when Staithes broke through on their left wing. Woody was unfortunate as he tried to get back and ended up playing their player onside as he turned to get in line with Danny. Staithes through with only Dale to beat.
Staithes used the wind well, and Danny Mac saved us going 2 down when he covered Dale and cleared off the line. (16 mins.)
18 mins – yellow card Peter P.
We started to get back into the game and Marcus was unlucky when he tried to put Lee J. through into the box, his pass falling behind Lee’s run.
Staithes pressed and Dale was forced to make a superb save on 28 minutes, cross from the left, header on the 6 yard line, saved by Dale.
On 30 minutes a corner by Jamie G. was hooked off the Staithes goal-line. 2 minutes later and Dowsey was through on the left, as he got into the box he was ‘tackled’, penalty appealed for, corner given!!
We went 2- 0 down on 28 minutes, when Lewis gave a daft free kick away on the left, the Staithes player was going nowhere, however the free kick was floated into the Newmarket box and ended up going through Dales hands. Not sure if it was an own goal or not.
A minute later and Dale made a fingertip save as Staithes were through on the left again, the ref missed this and we were awarded a goal kick. A minute later and Dale again to the rescue at his back post.
41 minutes and we were 3 down. A Staithes corner, flicked on to the back post, free header for a Staithes player!!
43 minutes – Marcus yellow card.
HALF TIME 0-3. Heads down, game already lost, no belief that we could come back. This is how it appeared. I have never seen this before in a Newmarket side, Dan’s chat before the game wasted!!
Second half with the wind. Straight away Dowsey with a chance, through on the left, his shot over the top.
55 minutes and three substitutes on.
We ‘huffed and we puffed’ but were getting frustrated by Staithes.
72 minutes and Puckers with a teasing effort which crept just wide. 82 minutes and a life-line, Jamie G. with a excellent goal, 20 yards out on the left, his shot going in the far right of the goal. This was something we had not done all the game, shot from distance!
A minute later, and Jamie with a free kick in the same area he had just scored from, over the bar.
We had a couple more half chances, but it was not to be.
We had shown more grit and determination in the last 10 minutes of the game than we had in the first 80. IF we had done more of this we would have come off the pitch with at least a draw.
Full time 1 – 3.
Today’s problems were our final pass when going forward, and not defending dead ball situations. If we give stupid free kicks away, when a team has the wind and the height advantage of Staithes, then you can expect problems.
The other problems were ATTITUDE and HEART. Once you cross that white line, you make the decisions regards how you play, if you’re going to tackle, the passes you make, how hard you’re going to work. Moaning at each other does not help in any way.
No-one gets more frustrated than me, Mal and Steve, because we have seen what you are all capable of.
So we can sit and feel sorry for ourselves, or next week we can put it right. A quarter-final against Whitby Fishermen away from home. They are on a good run themselves, beat the top of their league at home today, knocked out Stockton West End in the last round, so it’s all to do. BUT we are more than capable of doing it.
As Dan has said, IF we pull together, we will achieve things.
